This was a surprisingly complex little extension / alteration design project. The existing home was very small with a tiny lean-to extension on an equally tiny block of land in South Hobart Tasmania. My client wanted to create a new living space, kitchen, bedroom & bathroom to add onto the existing home. We looked at doing an upper floor extension and it just didn't gel, so it was decided to remove the lean-to addition and extend into the very small rear yard. We wanted the extension to connect well with the existing home but also bring in a modern open feel. This is what we came up with after many sketches! The extended hipped roof joins seamlessly with the existing home. The timber framed and clad extension creates a lovely street frontage & fits in very well with the cramped site. My client now has a usable outside deck / courtyard & a modern, light filled living area that is multipurpose. As you can see we even managed to create enough space for the much loved baby grand piano! As with all our designs we specified higher levels of insulation & oriented the structure where possible to take advantage of the views of the hills & sun. Structural design was by Aldanmark Engineers P/L. Energy assessment was by Mike Westcott of Hobart Building Assessment Services P/L. Building surveying was by Lee Tyers Building Surveyors P/L/ A fantastic team of people to deal with!
